Role

Hybrid zone persistence in European Populus [Populus alba (white poplar), P. tremula (European aspen), and their hybrid Populus canescens (grey poplar)].

Detailed investigation of 260 poplar individuals from a large hybrid zone between Populus alba L. (white poplar) and P. tremula L. (European aspen) in the Danube river valley. The primary aim is to determine the genomic composition of hybrids (Populus canescens) in the hybrid zone using microsatellite DNA markers, and to study its relationship with a variety of biotic/abiotic habitat factors. This will allow testing of whether habitat-dependent (ecological) selection is acting on hybrid genotypes. The secondary aim is to study spatial genetic structure in the hybrid zone in order to determine the role of sexual versus asexual reproduction in hybrid persistence. Moreover, those results will contribute to a larger study aiming at a genome-wide analysis of marker introgression rates, with the goal of studying the genomic architecture of this barrier to gene flow. Also participating in the project ‘Species diversity and evolutionary radiation through hybridization: multidisciplinary and DNA-analytical evidence from Achillea (Compositae-Anthemideae)’. AFLP, sequencing and PCR-RFLP methods as well as morphological measurements are used to clarify processes of speciation by hybridization and polyploidy in Achillea (Asteraceae-Anthemideae) in collaboration with botanists and geneticists from Europe, Russia and China. Participating in EU-project ‘Tracking surrogates for intraspecific biodiversity: towards efficient selection strategies for the conservation of natural genetic resources using comparative mapping and modelling approaches’ (INTRABIODIV). Three levels of diversity (genetic, species and habitat) are studied in plants from the Alps and the Carpathians, and genetic biodiversity estimated using AFLP markers.
