Role
Access to Kew’s collections, increasing synergy between taxonomy and conservation of tropical plants, focusing on Brazilian flora, Rubiaceae and Cactaceae.
Engaged in promoting the accessibility of Kew’s collections through management of the Collections Management Unit and Regional Teams, integration of digitization and repatriation projects within the Herbarium, and establishing collections policies and guidelines. Supporting projects aiming to develop taxonomic products for use in conservation, especially in the areas of GIS and conservation and habitat assessments. Floristics and conservation of plants and habitats in Eastern Brazil: contribution towards accelerated surveys, floras and checklists. Working to generate and enhance data from NE Brazil repatriation project towards contributing to the Brazilian Red List of plants (http://www.biodiversitas.org.br/florabr/) and other regional activities. Taxonomy, systematics and conservation of Neotropical Rubiaceae, Cactaceae and Loganiaceae with regional focus on Brazil, in collaboration with institutes in Brazil, Argentina and Europe. Taxonomic research covers monographs, regional revisions, checklists; systematic research covers generic delimitation and molecular systematics. Main study groups include Rudgea, Faramea, and Mitracarpus (Rubiaceae) and Rhipsalis, Pilosocereus, Haageocereus and Discocactus (Cactaceae). Committed to training and supervision within Kew and in Latin America; currently supervising or co-supervising various PhD and Masters students. Long-standing research interest in Cactaceae and recently involved in setting up a botanic garden for cacti in Bolivia (Santa Cruz: Pulquina).
