Role
Curation of Lamiaceae collections in the Herbarium and Lamiaceae research.
Curation of Kew’s Lamiaceae collections and systematic research on the family. Research initially focused on two genera of African Lamiaceae (Pycnostachys and Leucas) and accounts for the Flora of Tropical East Africa and Flora Zambesiaca have been completed. Current focus is subfamily Viticoideae in South East Asia. Molecular systematic research on the subfamily, in particular the genus Vitex and its close allies, has been carried out in the Jodrell Laboratory, in order to investigate generic limits. Taxonomic work is on Callicarpa, with revisions for the Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak and the Flora of Peninsular Malaysia complete, and in progress for Flora Malesiana. This also involves the co-ordination of the Lamiaceae/Verbenaceae accounts for all three floras. A further project under development is the creation of an interactive key to the genera of Lamiaceae. In addition, an ongoing interest in Gesneriaceae is being progressed, especially concerning the large genus Cyrtandra, in collaboration with the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh.
