Plant Information for Northeast Brazil (Project completed 2009)
Promoting sustainable development and conservation through the development and delivery of key information resources

This project (1999-2004) formed part of our collaborative Plantas do Nordeste (PNE) programme. Northeast Brazil is semi-arid, of great botanical diversity, and includes municipalities with the worst developmental indicators recorded in Brazil. Its goal was to promote sustainable use and conservation of native plants by collating knowledge about their use and management and delivering demand-led information services.
Outputs 2006-2011
Whilst the principal outputs from the project had already been delivered by 2005, work continued on the production of a key publication on one of the most important plant families in the caatinga vegetation of Northeast Brazil: the Leguminosae.
Leguminosas da Caatinga was published in 2009 (Luciano Paganucci de Queiroz, Universidade de Feira de Santana). This 443-page illustrated volume constitutes an important resource for research, conservation and sustainable development of the region.
