Phylogenetics of the Monocots

Researchers at RBG Kew have long been involved with phylogenetics of the monocots, and have contributed to many phylogenetic analyses using both molecular and morphological data. The international monocot conferences and subsequent symposium volumes have stimulated research on this important group, making them now one of the best-studied of the major clades of angiosperms.
A series of higher-level monocot studies, from the first analyses using a single gene (plastid rbcL, published 1995), through the first multi-gene analysis in 2000 and a seven-gene analysis published in 2006, have clarified the relationships of the major groups of monocots. Further phylogenetic studies will include taxonomically comprehensive analyses and whole-genome analyses, but this work is no longer taking place at RBG Kew.
