Role
To co-manage the DNA Bank, and provide technical support to the botanical researchers in the molecular systematics lab.
This includes increasing the DNA sample collection (c. 36,000 in 2009) with new extractions from Kew's Living Collection, also from dried plant material in silica collected in the field by collaborators worldwide and by Kew staff, or, where material is not otherwise available, on request from herbarium sheets; Producing voucher specimen of extracted plants from the Living Collection for the herbarium; Keeping the DNA Bank database up to date; Teaching DNA extraction and purification methods to new staff and visiting researchers; Providing botanical researchers in the molecular lab, or worldwide via mail order requests, with aliquots from the DNA bank; Organising tasks for a volunteer and supervising her.
