Role
Dr Hind has a specialist research interest in New World Compositae, with an overview of the World’s Compositae.
Nicholas has an ongoing specialist interest in the Compositae of the New World, with a particular focus on the Compositae of Brazil (especially NE Brazil and the states of São Paulo, Bahia) and Bolivia, and has undertaken several field trips in these areas. He also maintains an overview of the World’s Compositae, having assisted in several Old World projects (Flora of Egypt, Flora of Mount Jaya, The plants of Mount Kinabalu, etc.). He is frequently called upon to name or confirm determinations of much incoming Compositae material, wherever it comes from, or whatever the source. He has a keen historical interest in the collections and in the Herbarium.
Current floristic research in Latin America includes Flora da Bahia (Compositae), with an aim to write up tribal accounts when invited, the Flora of Brazil (Compositae: selected tribes and detailed checklists), the Flora Fanerogamica do Estado de São Paulo (Compositae: accounts for tribes Astereae, Senecioneae, Eupatorieae [Mikania only], Lactuceae, Anthemideae), and the Flora of Bolivia (Compositae: preliminary checklist and determination of recent collections - see web publication below). Nicholas has also contributed several family accounts for Neotropikey (Compositae, Calyceraceae, Crassulaceae, Dipsacaceae, Valerianaceae) as well as editing many family account submissions.
Outside the Neotropics, Nicholas is still working on the completion of the Compositae account for ‘Flora Zambesiaca’, as a collaborator on the Eupatorieae, Heliantheae s.l. and Mutisieae tribal accounts for the Flora of China (to be published towards the end of 2011). He has also edited the first transcribed draft for the Compositae volume for the restarted Flora of Iraq. In addition to writing up horticulturally important taxa (mostly Compositae, but also sometimes taxa of other families) for Curtis's Botanical Magazine, he referees for several international journals, and is a member of a number of editorial boards and committees. He has also co-authored several recent Compositae accounts for ‘conservation checklists’ in Cameroon.
Nicholas has provided assistance to one PhD student, Benoit Loeuille (at Universidade de São Paulo), focused on Compositae tribe Vernonieae, subtribe Lychnophorinae (completed July 2011), and was ‘co-orientador’ of Mara Magenta during her PhD research on Viguiera (Compositae: Heliantheae - completed in 2006), also at the Universidade de São Paulo.
Nicholas has recently master-minded the move of the Compositae collections (some 8500 boxes of material) from their old home in Wing B to their new compacterised residence in Wing E, as well as providing a new generic classification for the move into their new home. He is in overall curatorial control of the family, and line manages one part-time assistant, Sue Frisby, and task manages two other assistants, one part time and one full time, for work in the Compositae.
