Lamiaceae Systematics and revisions (Hyptidinae), Neotropics biodiversity, conservation of Brazilian plants, floras of Bahia & NE Brazil; teaching taxonomy.

Visiting Professorship in Brazil (since 1996), teaching plant taxonomy and actively collecting herbarium material, especially in NE Brazil and Bahia, usually with students. Supervision of PhD. students in Brazil, the most recent on the molecular phylogeny of the Hyptidinae (Floriano Pastore). Actively publishing work, mostly on Lamiaceae, also on floristics, biodiversity, conservation and related topics.

Research projects are mostly on Lamiaceae systematics: revision of Hyptidinae for ‘Flora Neotropica’ (>350 species); Hyptidinae for ‘Flora of São Paulo’ (70 spp.) and for ‘Flora Mesoamericana’ (c. 40 spp, in press); Labiatae of the Brazilian Amazon.  A molecular phylogeny of Hyptidinae and a generic revision of the Hyptidinae, both jointly with F. Pastore, are in press.  Coordinated and wrote the introduction and substantial parts of text of Lamiaceae for Kubitzki’s ‘Families and Genera of Flowering Plants’ (2004), likewise account of Nesogenaceae, besides accounts for French Guiana and Grão Mogol (Minas Gerais, Brazil), and checklists: Catolés (Bahia, Brazil), Cono Sul, Lamiaceae in danger of extinction in Brazil, and Lamiaceae (major part) for the Lista de Espécies da Flora do Brasil (2010). Also papers on African Hyptis.

Plant Biodiversity studies include collaborative projects on carbon capture in caatinga woodland in Brazil, distribution of Lamiaceae, and a list of endemic Angiosperms in Caatingas of NE Brazil. An important paper on Biodiversity and conservation of plants in Brazil (Giulietti, Harley et al. 2005), has been much consulted. Field studies resulted in two illustrated volumes on plants of the Chapada Diamantina, aimed at tourists and students:one features useful plants of the area, based on local knowledge, the other features a series of mountain trails with accounts of over 600 plant species.

Ongoing identification work for British Lamiaceae, especially Mentha for the Botanical Society of the British Isles (BSBI) and Monks Wood Biological Records Centre, and lecturing on Mentha species and hybrids at BSBI meetings.
