Role
Curating Myrtales collection.
Taxonomy and conservation of Myrtaceae, with a focus on the predominantly Neotropical genus Calyptranthes. Ecology and conservation of the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest and Cerrado.
Taxonomy and systematics of Cyperaceae, with a focus on Rhynchospora and Scleria Neotropical. Interest on Amazonian forest.
Helping to curate Myrtales collection, naming new acquisitions and keep the collection, as a role, up to date. Database the collection in the section, prioritising those related to the projects being carrying out in the section, and also helping to keep them available on line.
Research is divided in two main groups. First of all focused on the taxonomy and conservation of Myrtaceae, particularly the genus Calyptranthes, one of the larger genera of tribe Myrteae (part of the 'Myrcia group'), in collaboration with Dr. Eve Lucas. The research is based on the Kew collections, plus important collections from Europe, North America, Central America and Brazil. Conservation studies in Calyptranthes contribute to baseline resources such as specimen databases and their application to geographical information systems and to statistical analysis of vegetation type.
Second is carrying on the studies on Cyperaceae involving a collaboration with different Institutions and researchers in Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, United States and Italy. This research is based on molecular and morphological systematics, the preparation of monographs, regional flora accounts and a global checklist.
