Orchids of New Guinea

A series of publications on the orchid flora of New Guinea, including CD-ROMs and a book covering selected species

The island of New Guinea has an extraordinarily rich orchid flora, with perhaps as many as 3,000 species. Large parts of it are still poorly explored or even unexplored, and many orchid species are only known from a single collection. Species identification is often difficult due to the large number of insufficiently known species. In the interest of science and conservation, a better knowledge of this flora is much needed. Towards this end, fieldwork and herbarium study will be carried out to increase our knowledge and make this accessible through a series of publications. One of the outcomes of this work will be a richly illustrated book, co-authored by André Schuiteman (Kew; principal author), Ed de Vogel (NCB Naturalis) and Jaap Jan Vermeulen (NCB Naturalis), in which all genera and a selection of the most important species of New Guinean orchids will be treated. The book will be published by Natural; History Publications (Borneo), probably in early 2012.
