Clerodendrum and related genera (Lamiaceae) of Southeast Asia - COMPLETED

Systematics of Clerodendrum and related genera (Lamiaceae): clarifying generic limits and completing revisions for tropical Asian floras and for horticultural applications.

The genus Clerodendrum comprises shrubs or small trees which bear large inflorescences of white or brightly-coloured zygomorphic flowers. Many species of Clerodendrum are important ornamentals or have medicinal properties. Some are pernicious weeds.

Considering the escalating degree of molecular studies, there is still a paucity of information about the species-level relationships within many plant genera. In addition, there has been no major revisionary work on the genus Clerodendrum since Lam’s The Verbenaceae of the Malay Archipelago in 1919, and during the last two centuries the circumscription of this large genus has changed frequently, with taxa being added or removed. Recent research, in collaboration with the University of Washington, using both morphological and molecular characters has shown that many of the existing taxa are not in fact part of Clerodendrum s.s., falling within Rotheca and the newly resurrected genus Volkameria (Yuan et al. (2010) Taxon 59: 125-133). There also exists much synonymy within this large genus, which has been resolved in Malesia now that a revision of Clerodendrum for Flora Malesiana is complete.

This project is being extended to aid an account of Clerodendrum in Thailand.
