Florisitic research on Poaceae with specialist interest in SW Asia (particularly the Arabian Peninsula, Egypt and Pakistan), southern tropical Africa (Flora Zambesiaca), Northeast Africa (Flora of Somalia), Macaronesia (Flora of Madeira) and UK (BSBI Grass Handbook) and world grass database. Specialist naming of grasses and rushes as BSBI British grass referee, BSBI British rush referee and referee for certain Juncus groups for Societe pour l'Echange des Plantes vasculaires de l'Europe et du Bassin mediterraneen.
