This Report was prepared by Eleanor Lawrence (telephone number 0208 2802) following visits by her and Elizabeth Cheesman (both Members of the London Wildlife Trust local group) on 9/10/11 October 1999 plus a couple of species found in this area on 17 October.

Kilometre square 1970

First mention of species roughly in order starting at Kingston Gate car park going towards Ham Gate along bottom of park, west of road, to just past the drain and returning on east side of road via Gallows Pond and along edge of woodland on King’s Clump. Numbers of specimens (approximate only) include all found during that portion of the walk.

Where we found something but I haven’t managed to identify it yet, I’ve included it with a note. I have the odd day free in the next few weeks so will go back as weather and time permits and see if I can find it again, now that I know what points I’m looking for.

Grassland/bracken and oak parkland; some hawthorn, and also beech, especially felled timber. Birch locally, esp. on King’s Clump.

RARE (Our specimen fits the picture and description in Phillips to a ‘T’ so I think it must be this one. However, on Monday, in the same place, I found another specimen, very similar but with no sign of the buff scales and umbo to cap, and which I would have identified as Leucoagaricus leucothites (Vitt.) Wasser [Lepiota leucothites (Vitt.) P. Orton.] (also RARE). So we’ve either got both (unlikely as they are both said to be rare, but Phillips also has a mixture in one of his photos so perhaps they habitually grow together?), or one is right and the other wrong. I am convinced that the pic in Phillips identifies our first specimen.)

Square 1971

From Isabella Plantation car park across grassland, reaching main road back to Kingston Gate opposite the road leading to Ham Gate. Then back along edge of grassland/trees above K.G. road, touching service road to Thatchedhouse Lodge. Down steep slope to mown grass alongside main K.G. road.

1 (small troop)

Under beech. Although the books say conifer woods, it’s also found on heaths. I’m pretty sure of this identification, as I’ve seen it before, and smell is distinctive.

Amanita pantherina (DC.: Fr.) Krombh.

1

Under oak at side of service road to Thatched Lodge

Amanita rubescens

1

Ditto

Boletus aereus Bull.: Fr. (this could conceivably have been an atypical B. edulis but the cap was much darker brown and somewhat velvety and the stem was covered in a brown network, not white. It looked a dead ringer for the pic. of B. aereus in Phillips, and agreed in all other respects.)

1

Ditto

Boletus edulis Bull.: Fr. (this was a tiny, very young specimen and thus possibly not a reliable identification, but cap had the distinct white rim of B. edulis and swollen stem was pale)

1

Ditto

Red-pored boletes. Need further identification. They will be either erythropus or luridus.

1

Nearby

Russula parazurea Schaeff.

1

Under oak

*Species names as in Jordan (1995) The Encyclopedia of Fungi of Britain and Europe. David & Charles, Newton Abbot, except where indicated otherwise. This is only if no species apparently corresponding to our specimen was given in Jordan, but it was identified from another guide.
