The Royal Parks are owned by The Queen in right of the Crown and managed by the Government through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS). Under the 1993 Royal Parks Framework Document, powers are delegated to the Royal Parks Agency which has executive responsibility for managing the 8 Royal Parks. The Agency reports to the Department and the Secretary of State is answerable to Parliament.

The site was made a SSSI in 1992, a National Nature Reserve, because of its ancient trees, and now has international recognition as a SAC for Stag Beetles.
The acronym 'SAC' stands for 'Special Areas of Conservation'. The EU 1992 Habitat Directive (92/43/EEC) provides for EC funding for the conservation and habitat management for work under the Natura 2000 scheme. If you want more details see EU-Nature & Biodiversity.
