Improving health and lifestyle of young people

FILMING, INTERVIEW and PHOTO OPPORTUNITY

To improve the health and lifestyle of young people, dozens of teachers from across the south visit Kew's country garden to discover how to plant, grow and cook healthy foods to incorporate them into the curriculum and the classroom back at school.

WHEN? Thursday 15 June 2006 - 10.30am

WHERE? Wakehurst Place - Kew's Country Garden, Ardingly, West Sussex RH17 6TN

ACCESS: B2028, Ardingly. (Jn10 off M23). Report to ticket desk in main visitor centre

WHAT? 'Plant it - Grow it - Cook it - Eat it' -- workshops, laboratory sessions, potting shed demonstrations and work in the School Garden.

WHO? Dozens of teachers and education leaders from across the south east.

WHY? There is a greater awareness of the importance of healthy eating as part of teaching in schools. Prompted by the work of TV celeb chef Jamie Oliver, schools are increasingly wanting to enrich their teaching by including healthy eating education.

HOW? Sessions will be run by Kew's experts.

'Plant it' - in the specially constructed School Garden and the Potting Shed. How to select a site for a growing area at school. Preparing the ground. Maintaining the area. Sowing, tending and harvesting crops.

'Grow it' - a 'healthy plants' workshop looks at the conditions plans need to grow.

'Cook it' - a 'plant eater' workshop examines how to sort plants by the parts we eat, and using these to design and cook a meal.

'Eat it' - the balance of good health in hands-on workshops.
