International Garden Photographer of the Year

 

Winners of the second International Garden Photographer of the Year competition are announced

The winners of the second International Garden Photographer of the Year competition have been announced. Their exceptional entries, chosen by a panel of thirteen judges from thousands of entries received from around the world, may be viewed online at http://www.igpoty.com

International Garden Photographer of the Year, 2009

The overall winner of the £5,000 prize for the best single image is UK-based photographer, Jonathan Berman for In Tresco Abbey Gardens . This dreamlike infrared photograph of Tresco Abbey Gardens on the Scilly Isles was selected from the Garden Views category.

Best Portfolio

The Best Portfolio Prize is awarded to Sebastian Kaps, from Germany , for Georgengarten : a collection of six breathtaking images illustrating the landscape garden at Dessau , Germany , following a heavy snowfall.

Young Garden Photographer of the Year

The Young Garden Photographer of the Year title goes to 15-year-old Kat Waters for the best single image from an under 16 year old. Purple Haze is an explosive close up of an echinops flower bursting into bloom.

Plant Portraits - Deborah Casso for Lone Lily Pad .

People in the Garden - Paul Debois for 43 Gardeners' Hands.

Garden Views - Jonathan Berman for In Tresco Abbey Gardens .

Wildlife in the Garden - Colin Varndell for Damselflies on Pond.

Trees - Dennis Frates for Lone Fall Tree.

The Edible Garden - Bapi Chakraborty for Super Tomatoes.

World Botanic Gardens - Matthew Bishop for The Futuristic Alpine House.

Special Awards

Spirit of the Japanese Garden - Dennis Frates for Japanese Gardens in Fall.

Best GPA Portfolio - Rachel Warne for Autumn Study.

The winners will receive a range of prizes, including prizes from Calumet , Epson, BISES, Photobox, Annabel Williams Contemporary Photography, Daymen, and the GPA.

The second International Garden Photographer of the Year Exhibition, featuring all the photographs of the winners and finalists, will open at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew on 23 May 2009 .

The International Garden Photographer of the Year Collection 02 book, illustrating all the winners, finalists and commended images from the second competition will be available from 23 May 2009 in all major book stores and also online at http://www.igpoty.com/shop.asp?parent=shop .
