Press ReleaseThree new plant family compendia by Kew PublishingLegumes of the World, A Monograph of Cupressaceae and Sciadopitys and A Bibliography of ConifersLegumes are a fundamental part of the world's wealth, contributing to almost every industry – food, drink, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, building, construction, textiles, paper making, chemicals and fertilisers, horticulture, pest control, waste recycling and ecotourism. Hence, Legumes of the World is a landmark publication being the first encyclopaedic work illustrating all 727 genera (representing 19,325 species) of the legume family. The text has been prepared and edited by 24 world experts, giving for each genus: information on the number of species, geographical range, etymology, ecology, economic use, phylogenetic position and at least one illustration. The authors have used the most up to date classification system, using the traditional taxonomic framework woven with the new molecular phylogenetic data, and have included full references and comprehensive picture, plant name and vernacular indexes. Printed in colour throughout and with over 1,100 illustrations, Legumes of the World is an essential reference for legume systematists, and a compendium of valuable facts for researchers, growers and gardeners. A Monograph of Cupressaceae and Sciadopitys includes introductory chapters summarising the history, morphology and anatomy of the family, which consists of 30 genera and 133 species and is the only family of conifers with worldwide distribution. All species are described with information on nomenclature, types, distribution, ecology, conservation, cited specimens, taxonomic notes and distribution maps. Full-page line drawings, expertly executed by the author, are included for each species. Introductory chapters deal with history, morphology and anatomy, phylogeny and evolution and distribution. A second edition of A Bibliography of Conifers (originally published in 1990) has also just been completed and is a comprehensive summary of botanical literature relating to the conifers, expanded to include 3787 references. An index to taxon names with reference numbers is added to facilitate finding literature on particular taxa. All three titles will be of interest to botanists, plant taxonomists and horticulturists alike.
