Press Release
Calling all plant connoisseurs...
The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew announces the date of its annual plant auction for Thursday 9 June 2005. The annual auction sees rare and remarkable botanic species go under the hammer, and the proceeds will help fund Kew 's work to conserve native British flora. In previous years, the event has proved to be a great success, attracting plant collectors and connoisseurs and also those seeking a glamorous evening's entertainment in the form of an exciting live auction combined with food and wine served in Kew 's elegant 18th Century Orangery.
Alongside plants nurtured at Kew will be specimens from further a field - trees, shrubs and conservatory plants including acers, betulas and vibernums, that have been collected by Kew staff during their varied conservation missions abroad. These species have been carefully selected so that British horticulturists may enjoy them whilst helping individual species to proliferate in their native climes. Many of these species are not available in the trade.
In addition to the plant lots, there are a number of exclusive items with a special Kew connection such as tickets to see Jools Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra during the Summer Swing concert series. There will also be opportunity to purchase a twilight wildlife tour of the gardens or even an advisory visit to your garden by one of our experts.
Professional auctioneers from Christies generously donate their time and skills for the evening. Roy Lancaster, plantsman, writer and broadcaster, will make a guest appearance, adding to the fun of this special event for plant enthusiasts.
Notes to Editors:
The evening will start at 6pm with a summers reception and viewing, and the auction will begin at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £29, including buffet and drinks.
