Press Release

Natural Visions - new work by award-winning wildlife photographer, Heather Angel

11 November 2002 - 27 January 2003, Kew Gardens, White Peaks

IFor release: 3 October 2002

An exhibition of work by award-winning photographer Heather Angel makes a stunning focal point for autumn at Kew Gardens, opening on 11 November. Natural Visions is a display of remarkable wildlife images, capturing the drama and splendour of the natural world from the poles to the tropics.

Renowned for her lighting and exquisite close-ups, Heather Angel has captured many memorable moments on her travels around the world. Seasons, skies and moods are captured as evocative backdrops to her animal and plant subjects. Thunder clouds glower over mountains in Colorado, a herd of impala nervously eye a leopard in Botswana and a giant panda playfully rolls down a snowy slope in China. An ancient oak tree, encrusted with mosses and lichens conveys a strange air of mystery, while a group of bog beacon fungi in the New Forest is a study in startling, fluorescent yellow.

The exhibition also illustrates some pioneering photographic techniques. Among these are innovative digital images of flowers, which blur the boundaries between reality and art. An intriguing study of lupins taken in New Zealand, achieved by making 30 exposures on a single frame, has transformed the flowers into an impressionistic painting.

For more than a quarter of a century, Heather Angel has been at the forefront of nature photography in Britain. She was President of the Royal Photographic Society from 1984-86 and Bath University awarded her an honorary Doctorate of Science in 1986. In 1994, Nottingham University made her the first British wildlife photographer to be appointed a professor. She has shared her skills through her teaching for many years and has inspired other photographers through her photography courses at Kew for over a decade.

The exhibition is based on Heather Angel's latest book, Natural Visions, published by Collins and Brown. The book is available from Kew's shops at Victoria Gate and White Peaks.

Kew also publishes a special reprint of Heather Angel'‚s book, Kew: a World of Plants, available from mid-December at Kew's shops.
