Touring the mansion
Monday 17th September, 2001
THERE IS an unusual chance to see 'behind the scenes' of one of the region's most famous mansions as the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew opens up parts of Wakehurst Place for historical tours. The fascinating history behind the Elizabethan mansion at Wakehurst will be detailed in a series of public tours through the autumn. "The mission of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, (which runs Wakehurst Place), is increasing knowledge and understanding of the plant and fungal kingdoms", explains Ranger Veronica Withall. "But the history of the mansion is so inextricably linked with the development of the Wakehurst estate as one of the world's leading botanical gardens, that it simply cannot be ignored." Enthusiastic staff and volunteer guides have undertaken much of the research. They will present their findings to small groups who will explore the building in hour-long tours, after learning more about its long and distinguished history as a Sussex family home, war-time camp and scientific establishment. "These tours will look at how the estate developed around the various buildings which have stood on the site", explains Veronica. "And, how their occupants were dedicated to building one of the finest collections of rare and interesting trees and plants from world-wide trips." The first opportunity is on Friday 5th October at 11.30am, with another chance on Saturday 13th at 2pm and again on the morning of Wednesday 24th. For full details, and to register an interest, call the tour line on 01444 894004. There is a £3 charge for each tour, the proceeds going to help Kew's conservation work both here and overseas. --ends- For further information please contact:
