Student Vegetable Plots
How are the vegetables cultivated?
As part of their Kew Diploma course, the students are marked on
the way they cultivate and manage their vegetable plots.
During autumn, they prepare the soil by digging the beds and adding
compost. In January, they produce a cropping plan to show which
vegetables will be planted where and when, and how often they will
be harvested or replaced. Preparation for sowing seeds begins in
March. Throughout the season, the students keep the plots tidy and
weed-free, while ensuring that their crops are healthy and harvested
at regular intervals.
These plots are assessed after they have been dug in November and
then again at monthly intervals from March until August.
