QuinineThe original cure for malaria, quinine is a bitter-tasting drug made from the bark of a rainforest tree called Cinchona. From the mid 1600s to the mid 1800s quinine was the main treatment for malaria throughout the world. Synthetic drugs have been manufactured since 1944 but some strains of malaria have developed resistance to these. Quinine continues to be valuable in the fight against malaria. Did you know?
