Michelia

This ornamental group of trees and shrubs have beautifully fragrant flowers. They are closely related to magnolias.

There are around 45 species of Michelia, all from tropical and subtropical South-East Asia. Several are valued for their timber which is used for carving, furniture, building and fuel. M. compressa is planted at the gates to temples and shrines in Japan as it is believed to have the power to invite gods.

The aromatic flowers of Michelia champaca are used for making an essential oil often used in perfume.M. figo is also known as the ‘Banana Shrub’ as its purple-streaked flowers have a potent banana scent.
