Fuchsias

Although most fuchsias come from Central and South America, New Zealand has 4 species of its own – all extremely different.

The tiny Creeping Fuchsia (Fuchsia procumbens), has rounded leaves and a spreading habit. Its green and yellow upward-facing flowers are followed by bright-red berries.

In contrast, the tree-sized Fuchsia excorticata has larger, burgundy flowers with bright blue pollen.

Did you know?
The bright blue pollen from Fuchsia excorticata was once used as a dye by Maori maidens to ornament their faces.
It is one of the largest fuchsias in the world and one of the commonest trees of New Zealand forests. Its wood is used for carving.
