Fuchsias

Fuchsias are some of our most popular garden plants. Over a hundred wild species of fuchsia are found in South and Central America. Many grow deep in the humid cloud forests of the Andes, where they are pollinated by hummingbirds.

Fuchsias were first discovered in 1693 in what is now the Dominican Republic.

During the 18th century Fuchsia coccinea was brought to Britain and grown at Kew. Many of our beautiful garden plants were developed from this species.

Did you know?
In their native habitats several species have medicinal or economic uses. Their fruits are sometimes used to make jams; in Chile Fuchsia magellanica var. macrostemma is a source of black dye
