Chamaerops humilis

This is the only palm native to Europe. It can be found growing wild in the Mediterranean on poor, sandy soils.

Long cultivated as an ornamental tree, it is now a popular conservatory and patio plant in England. This shrubby palm is easy to grow, hardy to -10°C, and pest-free.

Scent with a purpose
To attract weevils to pollinate its flowers, this palm produces a scent from the leaves below the flowers.
No other plant has leaves that do this.
