Cape Bulbs

In the south-western corner of South Africa lies the Cape Floral Kingdom. It is home to more bulbous plants than anywhere else in the world.

From the high mountain slopes to the lowland central plains, thousands of species of bulbous plants thrive and flower, including Agapanthus, Freesia and Amaryllis. Species range from the flamboyant to the petite and come in every colour imaginable.

Why so successful?
Bulbs can survive drought and fire. Fires allow bulbs the space to send up new flushes of growth, turning scorched earth into a riot of colour. 15% of all plants in South Africa are bulbs.
