Avocado

The Avocado plant in the Temperate House

Avocado

Avocado has the highest protein content of any fruit. This unique fruit with its buttery, vitamin-rich flesh has been cultivated for at least 3000 years.

The fruits come from the tree Persea americana, native to the rainforests of Central America.
They are usually eaten fresh as cooking causes browning and bitterness.

Did you know?
The first European to describe eating an avocado was Fernandez de Oviedo from Spain, and in 1672 it was also described by the Englishman W. Hughes as “one of the most rare and pleasant fruits…it nourisheth and strengtheneth the body.”
