Summer Bedding 2005 - Broad Walk, south end
This year’s bedding schemes have been inspired by Kew’s
Gardens of Glass festival.
Bedding designed by Emma Gardner
Emma has been at Kew for over three years and is currently working
in the Queen’s Garden. She previously studied Art and also
has a degree in Garden Design.
Metamorphosis
CONCEPT: Metamorphic Glass “A sharp fragmented edge or a
moody shade of green, a coolness to the touch, or a dazzling polished
gleam, it glitters with a crunch and sparkles into light, to beam
its many colours and dazzle you at night.”
The angle of the path is based on Snell’s Law (1591 –
1626) “When light passes from one transparent medium to another
it bends, creating the angle of incidence and refraction.”
Key plants
Zea japonica – its variegation looks like stacked
glass,
creates a dense backdrop.
Eucalyptus globulus – angular leaves denote the sharpness
of glass.
Craspedia globosa ‘Goldstick’ – chosen
for its movement, plays with the light.
