Summer Bedding 2005 - Broad Walk, north end

This year’s bedding schemes have been inspired by Kew’s Gardens of Glass festival.

Bedding designed by Sarah Smith

Sarah has worked at Kew since 1986 in both the Decorative and Herbaceous Units. She is now a Team Leader and works mainly in the Queen’s Garden.

Fiery Furnace

CONCEPT: “Celosia represent the flames which raise the furnace temperature, turning the urn into a crucible. Over its rim flows liquid Dichondra that falls onto rippling Cineraria sheets. Crystalising Verbena blues are bombarded by fizzling globules of Echivera rolling around the bed floor. Eruptions of metal Iresine pierce the movement, their glowing Coleus bases softened by the warmth. Smelted ores send out Capsicum sparks; bulbous domes of Aeonium burst and create Ophiopogon splashes!”

Key plants

Celosia the flame element
Aeonium the metal element
Cineraria the glass element
