Shape: narrowly conical to 25 m

Foliage: evergreen; has distinctive needle-like leaves deeply grooved on both sides arranged in whorls that look like the ribs of an umbrella

Female cone: egg-shaped to 7.5 cm long, red-brown when mature

Origin: Japan

Remark: this species is the only living representative of the family Sciadopityaceae. Members of this family were once more widespread; their fossilised remains have been found in Europe.
