Scientific name: Cephalotaxus fortunei

Family: Cephalotaxaceae

Shape: broadly spreading tree to 9 m in height; usually seen as a shrub in cultivation

Foliage: evergreen linear leaves up to 10 cm long, spreading in two rows on either side of shoot

Female cone: seed with fleshy coat that ripens olive-green

Native: central and eastern China

Remark: leaves of this conifer are used in Chinese folk medicine to treat cancers and have been found to contain alkaloids that inhibit the growth of sarcoma and leukaemia cells.
