Parterre 9. The indoor planter

A global threat - the interior planter

The indoor planter represents the overseas collection programme, showing dryland plants from around the world. Drylands are threatened across the globe and yet contain plants that are vital to the peoples of these regions. The planting here shows examples of timber and fuel wood trees (Sterculia setigera and Acacia farnesiana), crop plants such as caper (Capparis spinosa) and jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis), and flowers from the drylands such as the blue Blepharis ciliaris and orange Chasmanthe. Of particular interest is the lemur pea (Lemuropisum edule) from Madagascar. Classic plants of dry habitats are the cacti, and these are represented in the planter by Ferocactus wislizenii and Echinocereus engelmannii.
