Princess of Wales Conservatory - ferns

Ferns in the Princess of Wales Conservatory

The Princess of Wales Conservatory

Ferns

Ferns, although less flamboyant than many plants, are just as fascinating on close inspection, with their often delicately divided and curling fronds.

Like the orchids found nearby in the Princess of Wales Conservatory, they too come from both tropical and temperate regions and there are two separate areas for ferns which reflect their different needs.

Among the tropical species are the imposing stag's horn ferns (Platycerium), with huge, antler-shaped fronds, which attach themselves to tree trunks. There are tree ferns here, too, with Cibiatum in the tropical zone and Cyathea in the temperate zone.
