Towering black pine (Pinus nigra subsp laricio) near the Rock Garden by Kew on Flickr
After much consideration we have selected our favourite photographs from each of Kew's official Flickr groups and created galleries to showcase them. You can browse our 'Winter Up Close' Photo Challenge galleries here:
Below are the featured photos from December's 'Winter Up Close' Photo Challenge. If you want to get involved in this months challenge, the new theme is 'Light & Landscapes'.

'Kew Gardens in the snow' by Across the Lens (top)
We chose this photograph because it shows Kew's Temperate House in unusual surroundings - entirely engulfed in snow. The stark white palette and sweeping landscape really charges the imagination. Has Kew's iconic Victorian glasshouse been dropped in the middle of a snowstorm? See this photo on Flickr.
'American Hophornbeam in the Duke's Garden, Kew Gardens' by Zed.Cat (bottom)
We selected this photograph because it highlights the subtle colour and delicate form of this elegant plant. The snowy white background also complements the subject perfectly. See this photo on Flickr.

'Downy woodpecker (Picoides pubescens)' by Beobachtung (left)
We chose this photograph because it shows off the beautiful texture of this tree bark laced with snow. The impressive woodpecker in action also takes centre stage. See this photo on Flickr.
'Winter Wonderland' by Ron Hanko (right)
We selected this photograph because the composition and colour is fantastic. The seemingly untouched piles of snow on the picket fence highlight the sheer depth of snow that fell this winter. The tiny bug clinging to the fence post also reassures us that life in the natural world continues. See this photo on Flickr.

Some lovely images, but I'm not sure I'd have chosen the pine one above all the others to headline the piece
