Children taking bark rubbings at Wakehurst Place

Wakehurst Place is Kew’s glorious country estate at Ardingly, near Haywards Heath. This autumn we have a programme of seasonal events for all ages to enjoy.

The focus of many of the activities will be Kew's Millennium Seed Bank which this month celebrated collecting, banking and conserving 10% of the world's wild plant species – a total of 24,200 species.

The Big Draw

Wakehurst Place is hosting drawing and art activities for all ages as part of the Campaign for Drawing’s national ‘Big Draw’ campaign.

Even if you haven’t picked up a drawing pencil for years, it is an opportunity to be inspired by nature and help celebrate the Millennium Seed Bank’s achievements. Have a go at drawing and printing:

  • create your own artwork or add to a group project
  • help to design celebratory bunting and banners to decorate Kew's Millennium Seed Bank

Dates for the diary - Monday October 26 to Saturday 31, 10.30am to 3.30pm

Make an origami ‘gathering gadget ’ and set out on a journey of creativity

Get crafty and make an origami ‘gathering gadget’ in the Wakehurst Mansion, before enjoying a journey of creativity around the gardens, collecting natural fallen items along the way, such as leaves, feathers and seeds.

Then back in the Mansion, use these finds to help create a giant artwork called 'Nature’s Silhouettes', and make your own piece of work to take home, for example a mobile, leaf rubbings or a concertina.

Dates for the diary - Monday October 26 to Friday October 30, 10.30am to 3.30pm
