About the exhibition

The fourth International Garden Photographer of the Year exhibition launches at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, on the 14th May 2011. This unique outdoor exhibition of all the winning and finalist images from the fourth IGPOTY competition will be on display at Kew Gardens until 25 September 2011, before travelling to other venues across the UK.

The exhibition celebrates the work of some of the most talented garden photographers from all around the world – demonstrating both passion and technical excellence in this inspirational genre of photography. Walk amongst over 90 enlarged photographs and admire the photographic skill, creative compositions, stunning colours and global garden shots all displayed in an outdoor gallery located next to the Pavilion Restaurant.

There are seven categories on display: Plant Portraits, Garden Views, Wildlife in the Garden, People in the Garden, Wildflowers, Trees and 4 Seasons.

The competition

The fifth International Garden Photographer of the Year competition is now open until 30 November 2011. Entries can be made online at

  • Breathing Spaces (sponsored by the National Trust)
  • Bountiful Earth
  • Fragile Landscapes
  • Greening the City
  • Trees Woods Forests

Why not enter the photography competition? The competition is open to everyone, amateurs and professionals alike. Entries are judged each year by some of the world's leading photographers and editors. The competition offers cash and other prizes as well as a place in the prestigious exhibition and accompanying book. IGPOTY also has two Special Awards for Competition 5:

  • Best Image at Kew Gardens
  • Best Image at Wakehurst Place

IGPOTY are looking for inspiring photographs taken at Kew Gardens and at Wakehurst Place. Your photographs can be entered into any category, from wonderful creatures in Wildlife Havens to a spectacular bloom in the Beauty of Plants. To enter photographs for the special awards simply enter the competition in the normal way - in any category - portfolio or single image. Make sure you note in the caption that your photograph was taken at Kew Gardens or Wakehurst Place.

PRIZES: Two prizes will be awarded – one for the best image of Kew Gardens and one for the best image of Wakehurst Place.

  • One year's free membership of Kew Gardens (includes entry to Wakehurst Place)
  • Inscribed copy of the book Better Plant and Garden Photography
  • Your picture featured as a key photograph in the IGPOTY exhibition Your photograph included in the book International Garden Photographer of the Year Collection 5 (to be published in 2012)

There are prizes for all the IGPOTY competition category winners, runners up, finalists and highly commended images, as well as a top prize of £5,000 for the overall winner! IGPOTY also offers free personal feedback on entries to everyone who enters the competition.
