Providing independent, scientific advice underpins both quality assurance in research and contributes to better policy making. Between 2001 and 2006 we supported the work of numerous committees and boards For example, group members sit on five editorial boards and have executive / committee roles on the IUCN, ISTA, IUFRO and ISSS . In addition, recently we have assessed external grant applications worth £3 million

• Peer-reviewing articles submitted for more than 50 learned journals
• Peer-reviewing applications for funding to
  • the United States Department of Agriculture,
  • Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council
  • National Research Foundation of South Africa
• Helping to edit nine learned journals
• Making inputs to the triennial workplans of three committees of the International Seed Testing Association
• Acting as trustees to the International Society for Seed Science
• Supporting the work of the International Union of Forest Research Organisations' seed physiology and technology research group
• Supporting the Ex situ Conservation Group of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Orchid Specialist Group.
