Rosemary
Rosmarinus officinalis
Rosemary
A bit of a wonder herb, Rosemary has been used variously as a medicine, food preservative, stimulant, memory enhancer, and of course as a flavoursome cooking ingredient. But beware, Rosemary essential oil is potent and has been known to cause convulsions and seizures.
This fragrant evergreen perennial is native to the Mediterranean and has long been used as a herb in the cuisine of the region. Its reputation for medicinal uses meant that it was planted in many old herbal gardens. Kew scientists have investigated the benefits of rosmarinic acid, which has been found to have strong anti-oxidant properties.
