Midge larvae, snails and other aquatic invertebrates plus duckweed and other water plants.

Eaten by:

Fox. Herons will eat young moorhens.

Description:

A rounded, black bird, larger than the moorhen. It has a large white shield on its face. Its feet are not webbed, but instead have flaps of skin that act like paddles to help the bird swim. It makes a loud, metallic "kut" sound. Coots are noisy and quarrelsome.
