OCR AS Level Biology: Gene technologies at Wakehurst
Held in the beautiful setting of Wakehurst Place, West Sussex, home of Kew's Millennium Seed Bank, attendees will be provided with background knowledge on genomes and gene technologies. The day will also include the application of gene technologies in plant classification and conservation plus practical activities to engage students.
This full day course, run by plant scientists and Kew teachers, will be packed with practical activities and will include:
• Hands on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) simulation and its application to DNA analysis.
• DNA profiling:
DNA extraction methods
Use of restriction enzymes in DNA profiling
Undertaking gel electrophoresis in a lesson with fast gel staining protocols
Applications of DNA profiling
• New developments in DNA sequencing techniques
• Presentation by and Q&A session with a Millennium Seed Bank scientist on the work of the seed bank and gene technology research currently taking place in seed conservation.
• Behind the scenes tour of the Millennium Seed Bank including gene technologies in seed bank research.
The day will also include tea and coffee on arrival, a buffet lunch and the opportunity to network with other teachers as well as explore the gardens at the end of the day.
