OCR AS Level Biology: Biodiversity and Classification at Wakehurst

A practical one day course in association with OCR, designed to support the delivery of the elements of conservation, taxonomy and phylogeny.
Wakehurst Mansion and pond
Wakehurst in Ardingly, West Sussex

Suitable for all teachers who teach biodiversity and classification and are looking to update their skills, knowledge and ideas for teaching.

This course would support our Biology A and B specification teachers, however it is not specification specific, so delegates from any awarding body are welcome to attend.

This full day course, run by Kew trained A Level teachers who specialise in plant science and conservation, supported by Kew Scientists, will provide teachers with background knowledge and practical activities to engage students.

The event will be held in the beautiful setting of Wakehurst Place, West Sussex, home of the Millennium Seed Bank, where you will be able to engage with in situ and ex situ conservation.

This full day course will be packed with practical activity and will include:

  • Ex Situ Conservation – A presentation on Kew’s Millennium Seed Bank Partnership and Behind-the-scenes tour
  • In Situ Conservation at a Botanic Garden – including Woodland Management, UK Native Seed Hub and Meadow Regeneration Projects
  • Regulating Conservation, International and Local Conservation Agreements – CITES, CBD and CSS
  • Plant Taxonomy, Phylogeny (use of genetic information to reclassify plants) and stories from Kew to bring this topic to life.

An OCR Science Subject Specialist will be available to take questions on the day.

The day will also include tea and coffee on arrival, a luxury buffet lunch and the opportunity to network and explore the gardens at the end of the day.

Attend this event and further your knowledge of the new A/AS Level Biology A and B specification topics.  Explore practical activities, take ideas back to the classroom and take this opportunity to ask our Science Subject Specialists any questions.

Thursday 21 April 2016,  09:45 - 16:00

This course costs £220 and includes a set of essential course materials.
