Botanical nomenclature training course

This one-week Botanical Nomenclature course, led by Kew specialists with extensive practical experience, covers the basic principles of plant nomenclature according to the International Code for Nomenclature.

Course details

The course will teach the basic principles of plant nomenclature according to the International Code of Nomenclature (ICN) for algae, fungi and plants, so that participants can apply good nomenclatural practice when undertaking taxonomic revisions, compiling checklists etc. Participants will have time to pursue their own research interests using the collections at Kew, with the emphasis on identifying and solving nomenclatural problems.

Course duration: The course runs Monday-Friday for one week

Course venue: Classes are taught in the Kew department, Herbarium, Library, Art & Archives (situated next to the Main Gate to the Gardens on Kew Green); about 15 minutes’ walk from Kew Gardens Underground station (District Line/London Overground) and 10 minutes’ walk from Kew Bridge station (South West Trains).

Course fee: The course fee is 500 euros. This covers teaching and course materials.

MSc students, PhD students and early-career researchers working in taxonomy.

How is the course taught?

Mainly by lectures illustrated with examples from the ICN, but also workshop sessions applying what has been learned to 'real life' cases and by encouraging participants to discuss nomenclatural problems they have encountered. Short seminars will give participants the opportunity to present nomenclatural problems relevant to their own research.

Visas

In order to attend these courses at Kew, students from outside the European Economic Area may need to apply for a Student Visitor Visa from the UK Border Agency to enter the UK. For this purpose, Kew is accredited by the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education as a Short Course Provider. Further information will be provided to course applicants – you will need to be accepted onto a course before you can apply for a student visitor visa.
