AS/A2 Level programmes at Wakehurst

AS/A2 Level visits to Wakehurst are taught by experienced and enthusiastic Kew Teachers. The AS/A2 programmes are planned in detail and tailored to suit your A Level specifications.

Wakehurst Schools and Families offers groups on assisted visits a varied and dynamic range of activities to choose from.

A typical day at Wakehurst is made up of two activities of approximately 1.5 - 2 hours each, one in the morning and one after lunch.

Days are tailored to suit your A Level specifications and are planned in detail prior to the visit. At this stage learning outcomes are agreed.

Each session in the AS/A2 programme has a capacity of 20-30 students. Wakehurst can accommodate groups of up to 120 students by implementing a rotating timetable on your visit.

1. Biology workshop - Cloning

Students learn about asexual reproduction in conservation and mass propagation techniques. This biotechnology workshop is designed to enhance curriculum delivery at AS/A2.

2. Biology workshop -  DNA profiling

Students learn about the application of DNA fingerprinting in Customs and Excise investigation. This biotechnology workshop is designed to enhance curriculum delivery at AS/A2.

3. Biology workshop - Photosynthesis

Students take a practical approach to photosynthesis which relates theory to practice. This biotechnology workshop is designed to enhance curriculum delivery at AS/A2.

4. Biology workshop - Taxonomy: classification and nomenclature

Students take a practical approach to classification and the naming of plants. This workshop is designed to enhance curriculum delivery at AS/A2.

5. Ecology and the environment workshop - Kew's Millennium Seed Bank

Students visit Kew's Millennium Seed Bank, the largest wild plant seed bank in the world, and see ex-situ conservation in action. The ecology and the environment workshop is designed to enhance curriculum delivery at AS/A2.


 6. Themed day - Conservation

Bring your students to Wakehurst to experience aspects of in-situ and ex-situ conservation in action including Kew's Millennium Seed Bank. This visit is designed to enhance curriculum delivery at AS/A2.

7. Themed day - Ecology

Students take part in ecological studies in a variety of habitats and learn about in-situ conservation techniques. This visit is designed to enhance curriculum delivery at AS/A2.

8. Themed day - Geography

Students study sustainability and biodiversity management techniques in a traditionally managed wildflower meadow, coppiced and ancient woodland. The Millennium Seed Bank offers a look at worldwide ex-situ conservation projects. This visit is designed to enhance curriculum delivery at AS/A2.

9. Themed day - Art

Students sketch and collect photographs for landscape, natural form and still-life projects. This visit is designed to enhance curriculum delivery at AS/A2.
