Key Stage 4 programme at Kew Gardens
School visits at Kew Gardens are taught by experienced and enthusiastic Kew Teachers, most of whom are qualified teachers. The Key Stage 4 programme has been developed to align with the National Curriculum and the QCA/DfE schemes of work.
Many secondary programme workshops are taught in classroom spaces inside Museum No. 1.

The duration of this session is 90 minutes.
2. Activity tour - Economic botany
Students learn about important relationships between plants and people. The duration of this session is 45 minutes.
3. Activity tour - Plant adaptations to the environment
Students explore the Princess of Wales Conservatory and learn about the climate and plants of the wet tropics, dry tropics and aquatic environments. Students learn to recognise the special adaptations which allow plants to thrive in arid or wet environments, low-nutrient soil, and water. Choose between the 45 minute activity tour and the 90 minute extended activity tour.
4. Activity tour and workshop - Plant reproduction
Students learn about plant reproductive systems, including sexual and vegetative reproduction. In addition to a tour of the Gardens, or one of our glasshouses, students examine flower anatomy through dissection. The duration of this session is 90 minutes.
5. Activity tour and optional workshop - Rainforest
Students explore Kew's indoor rainforest, located in the Palm House, and learn about the unique climate and plants of the wet tropics. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between people and the rainforest, threats facing the world's rainforests and plant adaptations to the wet tropics. Choose between the 45 minute activity tour and the 90 minute activity tour and workshop.
