Key Stage 2 programme - Tropical rainforest experience activity tour and optional workshop

In theses sessions, primary school students embark on a multi-sensory journey through the rainforest. Choose between the 45 minute activity tour and the 90 minute activity tour and workshop.

Rainforest Experience

Primary students discover the function of drip tips on rainforest plants.

Overview

Students explore the sights and smells of the amazing variety of rainforest plants growing in Kew's own indoor rainforest, located in the historic Palm House

In the workshop, students taste some of the foods of the rainforest, handle rainforest plants and explore the music of the rainforest using instruments made from plants.

  • Length: Activity tour - 45 minutes | Activity tour and workshop - 90 minutes.
  • Group size: 15 students.
  • Minimum supervision required: 1 adult per 8 students.
  • Programme cost: Activity tour - £25 per group of 15 students | Activity tour and workshop - £50 per group of 15 students.
  • Administration fee: £80.

Learning outcomes

School visits at Kew Gardens support and enhance the curriculum offered in schools. We aim to give students opportunities that are difficult or impossible to create in the school environment.

As teachers ourselves, we design our sessions to match the learning outcomes in the National Curriculum. At the moment, the new government has withdrawn the changes planned for 2010/11 and will be producing new curriculum guidelines. Once they have done that, we will re-visit the learning outcomes for our sessions.

The learning outcomes shown apply to the curriculum as it is at this time. This session offers students the opportunity to learn to:

  • describe the conditions in a rainforest using appropriate vocabulary
  • compare and contrast the rainforest climate to a temperate climate
  • demonstrate an understanding of the biodiversity of rainforest plant life by describing a variety of shapes, sizes and colours of plants that they’ve  encountered
  • describe several relationships between a plant and an animal or insect
  • describe several adaptations which allow plants to live successfully in the rainforest
  • identify several foods sourced from the rainforest
  • discuss the need to protect the world's rainforests.
