Key Stage 2 programme - Plants growing activity tour and optional workshop
In these sessions, primary school students are introduced to plant life cycles - including pollination and seed dispersal - and the factors necessary for plants to live and grow. Choose between the 45 minute activity tour and the 90 minute activity tour and workshop.
Primary students learn about the parts of a plant in the Plants growing workshop.
Students are introduced to plants as living organisms which grow and change. They learn to identify leaves, stems and flowers on growing plants and learn the function of these plant parts. Students are also introduced to the life cycle of a flowering plant.
In the activity tour, students explore plants in Kew's magnificent environment and look at parts of a flowering plant, plant pollination and fertilisation and find out about different seed dispersal techniques.
In the optional workshop, students take a closer look at the parts of a flowering plant and learn about the role that different parts of a plant take in keeping the plant healthy. They also study a variety of seeds from around the world and discover different methods of seed dispersal. At the end of the session, students plant a seed to take home as a lasting memento of their Kew experience.

School visits at Kew Gardens support and enhance the curriculum offered in schools. We aim to give students opportunities that are difficult or impossible to create in the school environment.
As teachers ourselves, we design our sessions to match the learning outcomes in the National Curriculum. At the moment, the new government has withdrawn the changes planned for 2010/11 and will be producing new curriculum guidelines. Once they have done that, we will re-visit the learning outcomes for our sessions.
The learning outcomes shown apply to the curriculum as it is at this time. This session offers students the opportunity to learn to:
- identify key parts of a plant (flower, stem, leaf, roots)
- understand that plants produce seeds and that new plants grow from seeds
- list the factors necessary for plants to grow (water, nutrients, air and sunlight)
- state the basic function of a flower, stem, leaf and root
- describe variation among seeds (shapes and sizes) and will sort seeds based on physical properties
- identify several mechanisms of seed dispersal.
