Key Stage 2 programme at Kew Gardens

School visits to Kew Gardens are taught by experienced and enthusiastic Kew Teachers, most of whom are qualified teachers. The Key Stage 2 programme has been developed to align with the National Curriculum and the QCA/DfE schemes of work.

1. Activity tour and workshop - Art in nature

Students work outside in the Gardens and/or inside one of Kew's great glasshouses to develop their skills of observation. Activities enable students describe shape, line and colour. The duration of this session is 90 minutes.

2. Activity tour and optional workshop - Clever plants in different climates

Students are introduced to plants growing in a variety of environments, from the desert to the rainforest. Choose between the 45 minute activity tour and the 90 minute activity tour and workshop.

3. Activity tour and workshop - Healthy plants, healthy people

Students are introduced to the factors necessary for healthy plant growth and discover that plants are an important part of a healthy, balanced diet. The duration of this session is 90 minutes.

4. Activity tour - Number, shape, colour and space

Students use their sorting and counting skills to explore plants in nature. The duration of this session is 45 minutes.

5. Activity tour and optional workshop - Plants growing

Students learn about plants as living organisms which grow and change. Choose between the 45 minute activity tour and the 90 minute activity tour and workshop.

6. Activity tour and optional workshop - Tropical rainforest experience

The tropical rainforest experience activity tour is a multi-sensory journey into the rainforest. Choose between the 45 minute activity tour and the 90 minute activity tour and workshop.

7. Activity tour and workshop - Marianne North: Victorian plant hunter and artist

Primary school students will learn about the life and travels of Marianne North, Victorian naturalist and prolific botanical artist.
