OCR AS Level Biology: Conservation and taxonomy at Wakehurst

A practical day in association with OCR, designed to support the delivery and attainment of the F212 module on the elements of conservation, taxonomy and phylogeny. The course is ideal for NQTs or for those teachers who wish to build their confidence and strengths in this area of the specification.

The day is presented by Kew Scientists and an OCR subject expert.

This full day course will include:

  • Behind the scenes tour of the Millennium Seed Bank, including how to have a working seed bank in your school
  • Conservation of biodiversity and CITES resources
  • An in situ and ex situ garden tour and classroom resources
  • Taxonomy for teenagers
  • Phylogeny - classification by molecular evidence
  • The opportunity to network and share ideas for best practice

The day also features a discussion on assessment technique for AS Level Biology, with a Q&A opportunity.

OCR AS Level Biology: Gene technologies

A unique event designed to support the delivery and attainment of Unit F215 relating to elements of gene technologies. The course is aimed at those teachers who wish to build their confidence and strengths in this area of the specification.

The day is presented by Kew scientists, experts in the field of DNA technology and an OCR subject expert.

This full day course will include:

  • Hands on Polymerase Chain Recation (PCR) methodology
  • How Science Works - Behind the scenes tour of the Jodrell Laboratory looking at PCR, DNA banking and DNA barcoding
  • DNA extraction methods
  • Use of restriction enzymes in DNA fingerprinting
  • Comparisons of affordable equipment and consumables
  • Undertaking gel electrophoresis in a lesson with fast gel staining protocols
  • An opportunity to network and share ideas for best practice.

It will also include a comprehensive session on written and practical assessment in this content area and will feature a phylogeny seminar - Applications of PCR and DNA barcoding. What next?

Inquiry based learning training course for teachers

Calling Science and Geography teachers!

We are looking for 15 teachers to join us at Kew Gardens on this exciting new pilot training course for teachers and botanic garden educators on Inquiry Based Science Education, focusing on the topics of biodiversity, conservation and climate change.

Overall the course will entail 60 hours of work and is made up of:

  • three full days at Kew Gardens (10 October and 17 January and 24 April)
  • self study (including online activities and completion of assignments (15 hours)
  • visit to Kew Gardens with students (Free for class) May/June and evaluation (8 hours) 

We would be really excited if you can join us.

Our pilot courses (2011/12 and 2012/13) are free to participants.

Bioscience evening - KS3 to KS5 Biology at Kew Gardens, Richmond

Our bioscience evening will showcase biological practicals and resources aimed at enhancing the delivery of the Biology curriculum at both GCSE and A Level.

The evening has been designed to inspire, enthuse and support biology teachers by offering exciting and engaging hands on biological science activities that translate easily into the classroom, the Learning Out of the Classroom and Cross Curricula initiatives.

Browse the interactive demonstration stands with a glass of wine, listen and question eminent lecturers and take part in a range of hands on workshops and behind the scenes tours of the DNA banks at the Jodrell Laboratory and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

  • Understanding colorimetry workshop
