Continuing Professional Development by Kew
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by Kew offers a selection of teacher, technician and support staff training programmes. Courses support the delivery of science and other curriculum subjects through exciting and engaging practical techniques.
Through our programme we aim to establishing enthusiasm and confidence in the deliverer. All Kew courses are firmly based upon the National Curriculum, cross curricula interests, Learning Out of the Classroom and PLTS initiatives.
CPD courses
Below is a list of our current courses for primary and secondary teachers. Check back soon for course dates.
- Bio Science Evening for primary and secondary teachers.
- Technician training days for primary and secondary teachers.
Course fees - £130 per teacher with a technician or classroom support worker free, unless otherwise stated (technician training courses are £60)
Course location - Kew Gardens, Richmond and Wakehurst, West Sussex. Where stated these courses may run out of other venues.
Pilot training course for teachers
Calling Science and Geography Teachers! We are looking for 15 teachers to join us at Kew Gardens on this exciting new pilot training course for teachers and botanic garden educators on Inquiry Based Science Education, focusing on the topics of biodiversity, conservation and climate change.
Overall the course will entail 60 hours of work and is made up of:
- two full days at Kew Gardens (5 October and 19 January)
- three twilight sessions at Kew Gardens (4-7pm - in April or May 2012)
- a three hour planning session and a delivery day to your own class on site.
You will also need to take part in action research, including the development of an assessment piece.
We would be really excited if you can join us. Our pilot courses (2011/12 and 2012/13) are free to participants.

World's smallest waterlily brought back from the brink of extinction at Kew

Kew’s top propagation ‘code-breaker’, horticulturist Carlos Magdalena, has cracked the enigma of growing a rare species of African waterlily. The 'thermal’ lily (Nymphaea thermarum) is believed to be the smallest waterlily in the world, with pads that can be as little as 1 cm in diameter.
Director (CEO and Chief Scientist) of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to return to Australia

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew announced today that Director (CEO and Chief Scientist), Professor Stephen Hopper FLS will step down in autumn 2012 after six years in the job.
